Golden Hill Golden Celebrations – A New Heart for the Park

June 27 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Golden Hill Fort Celebration Flyer

An event to mark the completion of an ambitious plan to bring Golden Hill Country Park to life, is taking place on Sunday 27th June at 12pm, in Freshwater.

It will be a chance to enjoy a glorious day out on one of the Island’s best, open access countryside sites, with its wide-open spaces, stunning views across the Solent and fascinating heritage.

With storytellers, entertainers, archaeological and wildlife experts, all on hand to share the fascinating recent developments and mark this 50th ‘Golden’ anniversary of the park’s creation and 150 years since the fort itself was built.

Hosted by Gift to Nature, the Island’s environmental charity, who have been delivering a National Lottery Heritage Fund project, that has seen the military history studied, revealed and recorded by a team of archaeological volunteers led by Dr Ruth Waller.

Alongside the heritage discoveries, Gift to Nature have been busy developing the site for the benefit both people and wildlife, including planting a new community orchard, and to draw families into to this beautiful local asset, they have commissioned an impressive willow maze installation, that is already proving a great hit. Created to echo the original fort structure and using local materials, willow artist Eddie Glew, has built a spectacular addition that gives the park a unique attraction, with only one other installation like this is the whole of the UK.

So, come along and see this exciting revamp for yourself. Enjoy the Refreshments, music, dancing and kite flying. Learn a little about its past and how you can be part of its future.
