Freshwater Pound

Pounds, sometimes known as Pinfolds, are small enclosures where stray animals were fastened up. Most of these little stone walled enclosures fell out of use after the implementation of the Enclosure Acts during the 19th Century. Little open or common grazing land survived and farmland had to be securely walled or hedged.

In fuedal times the custodian of the Pound was an employee of the Manor, a fine had to be paid to release an animal and a portion of the fine was retained by the custodian as wages.

Freshwater is proud of the Village Pound; a constant reminder of local history and our rural heritage. In late 2007, Freshwater Parish Council, the owners of the Pound, and the Freshwater Community Initiative were fortunate to obtain a Heritage Lottery Grant enabling restoration work to be carried out, this essential work was completed in 2008.
